Hraunfossar ('Lava Falls' in English) is situated in the enchanting Borgarfjörður district of West Iceland, and this stunning series of waterfalls is formed from rivulets that trickle from the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The waterfall spills peacefully into the Hvítá river against a backdrop of an incredibly gnarled 1000 year-old lava field. It is believed to be the home of trolls according to folklore, and don't forget to take a short walk to Barnafoss, which famously had a bridge built by the trolls disgraced by an incredible tragic story! Don’t forget also visit to Reykholt nearby where you can bear witness to the intriguing history of Icelandic writer, chieftain, lawspeaker and poet Snorri Sturluson. Be sure to explore this magnificent landscape filled with hidden caves and iconic geology, and feel the power and legend of the area come alive!
