Mount Vesuvius is located on Italy’s west coast on top of the ancient Somma volcano. Located near Naples Bay, it is part of the Campanian volcanic arc, formed over a subduction zone created by the convergence of the African and Eurasian plates. It is most famous for its eruption in 79 AD which destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and entombed thousands of people beneath layers of ash and rock. Though the volcano is currently dormant with minor seismic and outgassing activity occuring, it still represents a threat to the area due to its violent eruptions. Mount Vesuvius is a fascinating site with 2,000 years worth of stories of explosions, destruction and buried secrets to uncover!
