Continue taking via d'Addozio walking with the panorama of the city behind you and that of the Murgia Materana park in front, you reach the church of San Pietro Barisano, the largest rock church in Matera with undergrounds.
San Pietro Barisano is an incredible monastery found in the I Sassi district of Matera, Italy. Dating back to the 12th century, this magnificent structure was given papal blessing in 1464 by Pope Paul II and has since evolved into a culmination of beautiful frescoes and artworks, as well as witnessing its fair share of history. The Abbey offers a wealth of archaeological and epigraphic information about local history, with Byzantine-inspired wall paintings and intricate moldings that demonstrate centuries of cultural evolution. San Pietro Barisano stands proud amidst the rocky hillsides and provides visitors with an opportunity to witness antiquity itself.
