Ruakuri Cave is one of the most breath-taking natural wonders Waitomo has to offer. With its spiralling pathways and smooth undulating passages, it's become famous as the Southern Hemisphere's only wheelchair accessible cave system. Maori legend tells us that this incredible site was discovered over 500 years ago by a young hunter on his search for birds. Visitors to Ruakuri can look forward to crystal tapestries, vibrant glowworms, fossilised remains and more, all ingrained in stunning limestone formations. There's even an opportunity for digital adventurers! The cave system was recently featured on Google Street View, so tourists or armchair travellers alike can explore its majestic underground world online.
