This spot just a little outside the old town of Chania used to be where the old leather factories were, during the 19th century when Crete was under Egyptian rule.

It was away from the city center and the waters on that particular spot are shallow and rocky, which helped the first stage of processing the leather. Nowadays, these factories are obviously long shut down. The old industrial-like buildings still stand and testify to Tambakaria’s history, most of which are now turning into new businesses.

I wholeheartedly recommend dining at “Thalassino Ageri” (meaning “sea breeze”) seafood taverna, some of the best seafood you’ll try in one of the dreamiest spots I can think of. The fish you will taste there is usually the catch of the day, so definitely as fresh as it can be. Make sure you book your table via phone since it's popular and you don't want to just appear there and miss the sunset waiting for your table.
