Akershus Festning is a Medieval castle in the Norwegian capital of Oslo which has served as a military base, prison, royal residence, and mausoleum since its construction in the late 1290s. For centuries, this impressive fortress watchfully guarded the city and was successfully defended against repeated sieges and attacks. Today, it remains open to the public who may explore its chambers and courtyards that were once occupied by powerful monarchs and punished criminals alike. Visitors can even take pictures with the King's Guard, or dine at the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall - making for an unforgettable, and historically engaging, experience.
