If you're keen to dive deep into the rich history of Fogo Island, Al’s Walking Tour in Tilting and Oliver’s Cove is an absolute must. Al Dwyer, a local historian and captivating storyteller, guides this enlightening journey through one of Newfoundland’s most historically Irish settlements.

The tour starts in the picturesque town of Tilting, where Al’s Irish-inflected accent enhances the feeling of stepping back into a bygone era. As we walked through the Tilting Heritage site, the beautifully preserved fishing stages and traditional saltbox houses provided a perfect backdrop for stunning photographs and a glimpse into the island's storied past.

Al brought history to life as we followed the scenic Oliver’s Cove Trail, sharing tales of each landmark, which enriched our understanding of the early Irish settlers' lives and struggles on Fogo Island.

The trail wound along the breathtaking coastline, passing iconic sites like the Devil’s Rocking Chair, famously featured in Newfoundland tourism ads. Ending the walk, we looked back at Tilting from a vantage point that offered a gorgeous panorama, leaving us with lasting impressions of Fogo Island’s enduring charm and Al’s insightful narratives.
