Water Street is one of the main roads downtown with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. It started as a trading outpost for various European nations and today is lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, pubs, and boutiques. In 2020, the city even made a pedestrian-only section of the street. The area was designated a National Historic Site in 1987, recognizing its significance in the 19th-century mercantile businesses associated with the Newfoundland fisheries and Atlantic trade. Overall, Water Street remains a vibrant and lively spot for shopping, dining, and exploring.
