4x4 and high clearance is required for the drive! Many people get stuck in the deep sand, so sand driving experience is a necessity. I would recommend airing down your tires to 18-20 psi prior to attempting the deep sand, and they may need even more in the summer. Honestly, the slot is beautiful, but I do not think it’s worth the 8.5 miles RT walking from the highway without a 4x4 vehicle. Walking uphill in the deep sand is awful back to your vehicle. If you're looking for a high reward option in this area and don't have 4x4, consider Wire Pass instead. If you are brave enough to try the drive — here is the route we took: Approach to Red Canyon
LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE YOU? I highly recommend Coral Cliff Tours. I've used them in the past and was so happy with the experience! Link attached.
Be sure to watch out for the moki steps along the left side of the canyon wall (if heading into the canyon.) They will be about half way through around coordinates 37.18034, -112.56247.
What are moki steps? Moki Steps are ancient carved steps created to gain access to areas where it would be impossible otherwise. The moki steps in this canyon can be seen in the first photo in the series -- I positioned myself as if I'm looking at them for easy finding.
