This hotel is the closest for the snow monkey park (at the entrance of the park) which would be really the perfect option for those who would like to stay nearby. If you prefer not to stay here, I would highly suggest a visit to the onsen which can be used for day visits and currently costs 800 yen per person. The hot spring is outdoors and is very beautiful, I'm very surprised that it's rarely busy. Tattoo friendly!

Why stay here? This would be great for those who would like an early or late start to walk to the monkeys which are the best times to avoid the crowds.

There are plenty of buses that service this area as the monkeys are one of the most popular attractions in all of Japan during winter.
