Vatnajökull is an impressive and captivating glacial landscape of picturesque beauty, located in the south-east of Iceland. Its expansive size makes it the country’s largest ice cap and second largest in Europe. Vatnajökull has become an international film shooting location due to its breathtaking view; from A View to a Kill to Game of Thrones, there’s much to explore around this glacier! It is 7,900 km2, with an average thickness of 380 m, which then reaches up to a maximum of 950 m. Plus, there are numerous volcanoes underneath, that continue to erupt below the glacial surface. Jökulhlaup (glacier outbursts) have been recorded due to that activity—the last one occurred in 1934 releasing 15 km3 of water!
