The T.S.S. Waverley is an incredible piece of New Zealand maritime history, found peacefully rusting in the mud of the Wairau Lagoons in Marlborough. The steamer was originally built in 1883 by Bailey and Seager for the Patea Steam Shipping Company. It was then sold and was used by the Anchor Steam Shipping Company of Nelson for regular travels from Wellington to Nelson, Greymouth and Westport. In its lifetime, it made some pretty incredible accomplishments - such as a rescue attempt of the S.S. Ruhapehu when it stuck in Farewell Spit! Although initially intended to be sunk to form a breakwater, turbulent flood waters ensured the ship met its final resting place at the Wairau Lagoons - where it still remains today, serving as an important reminder of New Zealand's past.
