If you enjoy history and culture, this stop is for you. Hvalsneskirkja church holds a special place in many Icelander's hearts who love music and history. Hallgrímur Pétursson, a beloved 17th-century priest, was the church's long standing clergyman. The icon Hallgrímskirkja church in downtown Reykjavík is named after him.
Locals used basalt stones from the area to create the exterior of the church and driftwood that washed up on the shore to make the interior during 1886 and 1887.
The church is still in use today and can hold up to 100 people.
During the summer, there are many birds nesting along the road to this church. You can see many of them close up as you drive.
