Óshlíð, once the lifeline for Bolungarvík's inhabitants in the Westfjords as their sole link to Iceland's road system, holds a fascinating history.

Construction on this scenic road commenced in the 1950s, etching a path through the rugged terrain of the West fjords. However, with the advent of the new Bolungarvík Tunnel in 2010, the road was abandoned and became a playground for those seeking outdoor recreation and breathtaking vistas.

As you traverse the paved path of Óshlíð, a sense of awe will wash over you. Towering cliffs, seemingly suspended in mid-air, soar 300 to 400 meters above, reminding us of our humble place in the grand tapestry of nature. The sheer magnitude of these geological wonders will leave you feeling both exhilarated and humbled.

It's worth noting that Óshlíð's fame is also tied to its challenging road conditions, shaped by the whims of nature. Avalanches, rockslides, and falling stones contribute to the untamed nature of the route.

Furthermore, the relentless forces of weather and the encroaching sea have eroded parts of the paved lane, creating an adventurous atmosphere for intrepid explorers. As you embark on your journey, exercise caution, and consider leaving your vehicle parked safely on either side of the pass, immersing yourself fully in the rugged beauty on foot or by bicycle.

Pro tip: the radiant summer nights in this region are an absolute must-see spectacle. Prepare to be awestruck as the sun casts its final golden rays, painting the sky in hues of fiery brilliance. Nowhere else will you witness a more magnificent sunset than from Óshlíð and Óshólar. Soak in the tranquility of the surroundings, where time seems to stand still, and let the ethereal beauty of the fading sun weave its magic upon your soul.

To ensure a seamless exploration of Óshlíð, information signs await you at Hnífsdalur, where your journey commences. Take a moment to pause, savor a cup of coffee, and relish the anticipation of the adventure ahead. It's the perfect opportunity to gather your thoughts and soak in the serene atmosphere before embarking on your quest into the sunset-kissed horizon.

At the Bolungarvík end of the road is the fascinating Ósvör Maritime Museum.
