Visit the most recognized landmark in Reykjavík and an iconic church in Iceland.
Lutheran is the official religion of Iceland and Hallgrímskirkja, a lutheran church, in downtown Reykjavík is one of the tallest buildings in the country.
The distinct architecture was designed by state architect Guðjón Samúelsson and was finished by 1940. The outside was designed it to resemble the basalt columnar rocks, mountains and glaciers of Iceland's landscape. Hallgrímskirkja is named after Icelandic poet and cleric Hallgrímur Pétursson. He is the author of the Passion Hymns.
There are over 5,000 pipes in the organ and they are display of them in the church is gorgeous.
If you want to see a beautiful view of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains, you can pay 1.000 ISK ($7) to take an elevator to the top of the tower.
Right outside of the church you are greeted by a statue of Leif Erikson. It was a gift from the U.S. in honor of the 1930 Althingi Millennial Festival that commemorated the 1,000 year anniversary of Icelandic Parliament starting in 930 AD.
A walk around inside of this gorgeous church is a must-do, if you are visiting Reykjavík.
