After hiking up Helgafell mountain, I was a believer that there is something unique about this mountain. Whether it is the folklore behind it or just the stunning nature I got to witness at the top, I don’t know but I do know that I recommend doing this hike.
One of the things that make the hike up Helgafell mountain so special is the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, you can see the town of Stykkishólmur, and other parts of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It's a view that's truly worth the climb.
Another great thing about hiking up Helgafell mountain is the rich history and mythology surrounding the mountain. Helgafell is considered a sacred mountain in Icelandic folklore, and it's said that if you climb to the top without looking back or talking along the way (as well as on the way back down), you'll be granted the three wishes that you made at the top.
The hike itself is moderately challenging. The trail is well-marked and takes about an hour to hike to the top of the mountain. The ascent is steep, but the panoramic views and the sense of accomplishment when you reach the top make it all worth it.
One of the best things about hiking up Helgafell mountain is that it's easily accessible from the town of Stykkishólmur, which is a charming coastal town with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and accommodations.
After your hike, you can explore the town, visit the local museum, or take a boat tour of the surrounding islands.
Fun fact – sometimes the local farm dogs will meet you at the edge of the mountain and hike with you, if you allow them. 😊 Also, make sure that your wishes are of good intent, think them while facing east and tell no one after you have asked for them.
