Arctic Henge is not your run-of-the-mill travel destination. This place epitomizes a fusion of ancient spirituality and majestic natural beauty. Situated in Raufarhöfn, one of the most remote and northernmost villages in Iceland, Arctic Henge (Heimskautsgerðið) is an immense and intricate monument that transcends the typical tourist trail. It’s a modern tribute to ancient Icelandic culture. It’s inspired by the old Norse religion, Ásatrú, and echoes the form of Stonehenge in England.

The Arctic Henge is designed to capture the sunlight in a fascinating way, creating a play of light and shadows that changes with the seasons. The experience it provides, particularly on the summer and winter solstices, is nothing short of magical. Picture the Midnight Sun of summer or the mystical Northern Lights of winter dancing above these gigantic stone arches – this is a sight that deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list. One of the true joys of visiting Arctic Henge is the journey there. The Norðurausturvegur route will take you through some of Iceland's most untouched and awe-inspiring landscapes. Deep fjords, breathtaking waterfalls, rugged mountains, and an endless horizon - the trip to Raufarhöfn is as much an adventure as the destination itself. Raufarhöfn itself is a charming fishing village, with just over 200 inhabitants. This tiny town offers a taste of authentic Icelandic life that's far removed from the tourist-heavy areas of Reykjavik. Enjoy the local delicacies, take part in village life, and let the warm hospitality of the locals embrace you. If you visit during the summer months, you can witness the captivating Midnight Sun – when the sun never fully sets, leaving the Henge bathed in a mystical golden glow. Alternatively, visit during the winter months to have a chance to witness the enchanting display of the Aurora Borealis, casting a magical display of colors that dance over the Henge and the surrounding snow-laden landscapes. Just know that traveling during winter might be challenging because of intense weather conditions.
