The ferry ride to the Westman Islands on its own is an adventure. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes and offers stunning views of the coastline and surrounding islands. If the weather permits, I suggest going outside to the front of the boat. As you get closer to Heimaey (aka Home Island), you see how the landscape of the island changed after the eruption of Eldfell in 1973. The lava flow almost closed off the harbor, which have prevented the residents from being able to easily access their island.

On the left side of the boat is an all-black church. It was a gift from the Norwegians to celebrate the 1000th year of Christianity in Iceland. On the right are gorgeous mountains and sea cliffs. I always feel like I am entering a fairy wonderland when I come here, especially during summer.

Pro-tip - Take your car with you on the ferry ride. The price I have listed is for one adult but there is an additional cost per person and if you wan to take your vehicle to the island too. Here is where you can check out the prices for the ferry - https://herjolfur.is/en/prices
