Waterfall
Similar to the majestic Hengifoss waterfall, Strútsfoss has red strata in the cliff sides surrounding the cascading water. It‘s location in the stunning valley of Jökuldalur, Strútsfoss waterfall is a hidden gem that's not yet on most tourists' radars. During summer, there is lush vegetation, and a tranquil stream that flows through the valley.
One of the best things about visiting Strútsfoss is that it's an excellent spot for hiking and exploring the surrounding area. The valley of Jökuldalur is full of hidden gems, including hot springs, small lakes, and stunning vistas. You can easily spend a day or two exploring the valley, taking in the stunning natural beauty and experiencing the peace and quiet that comes with being in a remote area.
Another great thing about visiting Strútsfoss is that you'll get a glimpse at modern Icelandic culture up close. The valley is home to several farms and small communities that have been there for centuries. It's about 8 km (5 miles) round-trip and the path is relatively flat but there is a steep part towards the end. Expect to take about 3 hours round trip if you are a decent hiker. Hiking poles, hiking boots with great traction, and water-resistant clothing are a must. It might not be raining when you head out but Icelandic weather is known to change within 5 minutes.
To reach Strutsfoss waterfall, drive 14 miles (23 kilometers) south from Egilsstadir to Hallormsstadhur. Follow the 931 road south along the lake, then turn onto the 933 road and continue south.
Continue driving for around three miles (five kilometers). Then take a left turn onto road 935 to Sturluflot Farm, where you can hike to the waterfall.
