Get stunning panoramic views of the Westman Islands and the surrounding ocean with a hike to the top of Eldfell, a volcanic cone that formed during the infamous eruption of 1973. The view from the summit is breathtaking, and visitors can see the entire island and the neighboring islands. Plus, the red and yellow rhyolite colors of the mountain combined with the vibrant green moss surrounding the base of it is simply gorgeous.

As you hike through a landscape of volcanic ash and lava fields, you might notice the ground is warm and steaming. While the volcano is not expected to go off anytime soon, it is still active.

The 1973 eruption was a significant event in Iceland's history, and it had a huge impact on Heimaey's inhabitants at the time. The eruption took place during the middle of the night and everyone on the island only had time to throw on some clothes and evacuate immediately.

The Eldfell hike is a moderate hike that offers a good level of physical challenge. The hike takes approximately 1.5 hours and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It's a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the natural beauty of the island.
