Hofskirkja Church is located in the Öræfi region in southeast Iceland. Only six turf churches remain in Iceland. The church is located next to road 1. The church is 38km before Jokulsarlon when coming from Reykjavik.
Hofskirkja is a fairytale-like turf church in Iceland. It was built in 1884 and is the last of its kind in the country. It features a timber skeleton encased in sturdy stone walls and a grass-covered roof which helps to insulate the building from the chilly air. With burial mounds located nearby, the church appears to be sinking slowly into the earth. Turf churches were once very common in Iceland, but have since been replaced by more modern concrete buildings. Despite this, Hofskirkja still stands and is celebrated as an historical monument. Wonder seekers can still marvel at its beauty and architecture from the outside.
