the Rauðibotn crater is in the Hólmsárlón region. Rauðibotn is part of the Eldgjá chain of volcanic craters This little oasis is an unsung gem of the highlands, a crater of neon red and green contrasts in the middle of volcanic deserts and at the foot of the two huge glaciers of Torfajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The Hólmsá river and its small waterfalls that surround the crater make the place even more magical. the surrounding panoramas are incredible with views of the Mælifell and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Rauðibotn is totally isolated in the south of fjallabak and as much to be clear right away, the place is very difficult to access.

You will not find many tourists there, because if the place is unknown, it is also because it is far from road number 1 and the 4x4 is absolutely essential to get there.

In 4x4, there are finally 3 ways to reach the surroundings of Rauðibotn:

The F210 from the west The F210 from the east (is the easiest) This is, in our opinion, the simplest route and it does not involve any particular difficulties. Starting from Vik and road number 1 to the south, take the F209 then the F210 heading north. If the road is very bumpy, it has no fords or difficulties. A kilometer or two after passing the junction with the F233, the unmarked track heads north towards Rauðibotn, just before the famous Hólmsá ford. The F233 from the east

Whichever route you take, the track that climbs north to the Rauðibotn car park is short (1 km) and has no difficulty. The parking lot is not indicated, but we understand very well that this is the end of the track
