Sigöldugljúfur means: the canyon of the valley of tears. This wonder of nature did not exist a few years ago. Indeed, Sigöldugljúfur was, for a long time, filled by the Tungnaá River until the construction of the Sigalda hydroelectric power station and its dam a few kilometers further north. The canyon then emptied and several waterfalls appeared and flow into the middle of it to offer the superb panorama that can be seen today. The site is easily accessible during the summer period between May and October.
Sigöldugljúfur is therefore not indicated at all. To reach the site, take road 208 north towards Landmannalaugar. The canyon is only 24 km from the Landmannalaugar car park, near the large Krókslón lake.
From the station of Hrauneyar, after 15 minutes of asphalt road, one passes in front of the power station and it is necessary to cross a metal bridge from where the road turns into dirt and gravel. From the hydroelectric power station, continue for about 3 km, the road then climbs a small hill before descending. Here, there is a car park on the right that can accommodate around ten vehicles, this is where you have to park. A short and very easy walk of about 15 minutes leads, after one kilometer, to the Sigöldugljúfur viewpoint
