The stunning Belvedere del Gianicolo offers some of the most breathtaking views of Rome. Set atop the isolated Janiculum Hill, lined with sycamore trees, this square is home to the equestrian statue of hero Giuseppe Garibaldi situated at its centre, honouring his life and achievements. The terrace overlooking Rome provides idyllic vistas of the city and its many notable monuments from the Pantheon to the Altare della Patria, and on to the mountains of Lazio - be it sunrise or sunset. A unique tradition aside, every day at 12pm 3 soldiers fire a blank shot from a World War I cannon to mark the exact time.
In any city I visit, viewpoints are always among my favorites; they allow you to appreciate the beauty of the city you are exploring. The Janiculum Hill is perhaps the most beautiful spot to admire Rome from above, offering a romantic view that captivates everyone. There are various options to reach it, you can easily walk there from Trastevere in about 15/20 minutes. I prefer to walk up as along the way you can observe various interesting points such as the Fontanone and the Tempietto del Bramante.
