The 'Greenway del Lago di Como' is a scenic trail that winds through ancient villages, stunning villas, and picturesque gardens along the breathtaking landscape of Lake Como.
The trail starts in the town of Colonno and ends in the town of Tremezzo, and it's 10 km (6.2 miles) long. It's a very easy walk to do, and it should take 2-3 hours if you want to do just the walk.
Along the way, you'll explore the small towns of Colonno, Sala Comacina, see the Comacina Island and then reach the towns of Ossuccio and Lenno.
In Lenno, I recommend stopping at 'Villa del Balbianello' to explore one of the most fascinating villas in Lake Como. The villa is on your trail, so I think it's a perfect way to reach it.
After Lenno, you'll go up a bit (but not that much). From here you'll still enjoy stunning views from above over Lake Como. You'll go through the towns of Mezzegra and Bonzanigo.
Then you'll go back by the Lake up, and you'll reach the beautiful 'Parco Civico Teresio Olivelli'.
On your way to Tremezzo, you'll spot 'Grand Hotel Tremezzo', which is one of the most stunning hotels in Lake Como. Nearby, it's located 'Villa Carlotta', with its gorgeous botanical gardens it's a must-visit!
From Villa Carlotta, you'll be in Tremezzo in a matter of minutes, and you'll have successfully completed this lovely walk.
How to reach Colonno, the first town of the Greenway: The best way to reach Colonno is by bus. Take the C10 from Como San Giovanni up to Colonno.
An alternative route, is to do the walk from Tremezzo to Colonno. If you want to do this, take the same bus, the C10 up to Tremezzo.
How to know you're on the right path: It's very easy, there are some small grey markers on the ground to indicate that you're on the Greenway Trail.
How long does it take: I think the overall walk can be done in 2–3 hours. If you plan to visit the villas as well (Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta), it might take a few extra hours.
I love to take my time to take a lot of photos and videos, so it always takes me a few hours more than average.
When to do this walk: It can be done all year round, but if you want to visit the villas as well, then from March to November it's the best time.
Costs: It's free to do, the only cost is the ticket price of the villas if you want to see them.
Recommended Itinerary: In my opinion, it's the best way to explore the Como side of the lake, as you'll go through so many lovely towns and see 2 villas along the way.
Start in the morning from Colonno (if you don't have much time, start from Ossuccio or Lenno). It will take a few hours to do the walk and a few more to visit the villas.
Once you arrive in Tremezzo, take the C10 bus to Menaggio and you can explore this town as well. It could be the perfect day itinerary, for your trip to Lake Como.
If you're staying one day more, then you can go to Varenna/Bellagio.
