Dettifoss is an incredible natural marvel located in the northeast of Iceland. It is said to be the second most powerful waterfall in Europe after the Rhine Falls. Dettifoss is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in Northeast Iceland. It measures 100 metres wide with a drop of 44 metres down to the canyon Jökulsárgljúfur, making it truly spectacular! It has an incredible average flow rate of 193 m³/s which gives it that added power and vigor, and visitors can witness its beauty by taking the road routes 862 or 864 – these provide access to the waterfall from either side of the banks. From these areas you can enjoy the sights and sounds of this remarkable destination, and there are many facilities to help visitors make the most of this amazing place.
