Epic Matterhorn views and mild terrain make this snowshoe trail the best choice in the Zermatt area for families or any casual hiker. This easy trail is mostly downhill, easy, short and can even be split in half if you need something shorter.
On this trail, you get a view of the north face of Matterhorn, not seen from other parts of Zermatt. We liked the first half of the trail best, with almost constant views of the Matterhorn and a full panorama of the area. There’s a nice cafe at the mid-point for lunch. Then a long walk back around the mountain on a snowy access road, still attractive but not the most inspiring.
Although the Gornergrat snowshoe trail would be our top choice in Zermatt, this trail was also very lovely and fun with the family. Please check snow conditions before heading out. If avalanche warnings are high, this trail may be closed.
Trail: easy • 2 h • 4.5 k one way • 28m up, 536m down See trail map.
Conditions: trail status • webcams • forecast
Tickets: Tell the ticket office which hike you plan to do and they will sell you the correct ticket. You can get a discount with the Swiss Travel Pass or other Swiss travel cards.
If you plan to also sled, you may want a Snow Fun Pass, which allows you to ride back up the train to the sled run after your snowshoe. This is also available as an afternoon half-day pass, which is less expensive.
