Schönhalden is a quiet mountain area near Flumserberg in Eastern Switzerland. It's a bit of a hidden gem, accessed by a tiny private gondola that only the locals seem to know about.
Because it's not a ski resort, the mountain is quiet and peaceful. I even saw a white snow bunny hop past, so cute!
This trail is a good one for snowshoe beginners or kids that are already good hikers.
If you prefer a longer hike, try Route B Mädems, which we also love.
Trail
They have two marked snowshoe routes. The shorter, easier hike is Route A Gampergalt, 3.7 km long, making it perfect for a quick half day alpine adventure. There are a couple steep uphills, but they are short and help warm us up on a cold day.
Trail stats: moderate • 90 mins • 3.7km loop • 220m up and down.
See trail map.
How to get there
The trail is at the top of the Schönhalden cable car - Kleinbergstrasse 1752, 8894 Flums
There are parking spots on the street and in a small lot a bit down the road. There is a bus stop, but it doesn't run on weekends and only infrequently on weekdays.
The tiny cable car takes up 8 people at a time, so sometimes there can be a wait. Best to go early, perhaps by 9:30am.
Costs
A round trip cable car ticket costs CHF 25, cash or card. No discounts for SBB travel cards.
You can rent snowshoes and hiking sticks on site for CHF 25.
There's a restaurant at the top of the cable car, great place to warm up after the hike.
