Constructed by Mōri Terumoto between 1589 and 1599, Hiroshima Castle stands as one of the most iconic landmarks of the region. Also known as Carp Castle for the statue of a carp which adorns the castle grounds, the building was shattered by the atomic bomb blast of August 6th, 1945. Years later, an exact reconstruction of the castle - made primarily from reinforced concrete - was completed in 1958, earning it the moniker 'Phoenix Castle'. The castle now serves as a museum and archive, drawing visitors from near and far to learn about Hiroshima's history before World War II.
