Yamadera Temple is an idyllic ancient religious site located in the mountains of Yamagata prefecture, Japan. This spectacular temple, founded over a thousand years ago in 860 by Emperor Seiwa, is perfect for visitors seeking peace and beauty in nature. On the way to the main temple are many eateries and shops that make the journey more enjoyable. The hike up the mountain includes around 1000 steps, taking around 30 minutes, and provides a truly unique atmosphere with stunning views down to the valley. Along the way, visitors can have the opportunity to take in impressive traditional architecture such as the Mida Hora rock, shaped like Amida Buddha, and the Niomon Gate, built in the 19th century. Once you reach the upper area of the temple grounds, visitors will find beautiful temples, buildings dedicated to the founder, Jikaku Daishi, and even a statue of famous 17th-century poet Basho with an inscription of his famous poem. Yamadera Temple is therefore a great day out for those looking to explore Japanese culture and history.
