Koyasan is a site of sacred importance in Japan, where Shingon Buddhism has flourished over the past 1,200 years. Featuring an impressive array of temples and shrines, Koyasan offers travelers a unique cultural and spiritual experience. The Danjo Garan temple complex marks the center of Koyasan as well as the 48.5 meter tall Konpon Daito pagoda. The surrounding landscape is home to centuries-old cedar trees, providing shelter to a plethora of birds and small animals. Within Koyasan, visitors can partake in a variety of activities including experiencing traditional vegetarian Buddhist cuisine known as "shojin-ryori," staying overnight in one of the 52 Shukubo temple retreats, or embarking on the pilgrimage route winding throughout the Kii Mountain Range. All of this makes for an unforgettable journey for those looking for peace and tranquility in Japan.
