Pistyll Rheader is the tallest single drop waterfall in Wales AND a great walk for kids.
The bottom of the falls is just a few minutes walk from the car park making it a perfect spot for taking young children - as there's not a big walk, and there's some woodlands a spots along the river they can play in.
However, if you fancy a bit more of an adventure you can walk up yo the top of the falls. You have the choice of two routes (a steep but short climb or a longer steadier ascent) up to the top of the waterfall for some great views over the valley, and some lovely spots for a paddle and even some pools further up for a swim.
We took the longer route up which was fairly easy for my 4 year old, there's a few slab sections that get a bit slippy when wet but apart from that it's a nice footpath up to the top. There's a few spots on the way where you could stop for a picnic by the stream. It took us about 45 minutes to walk to the top with lots of stopping to play and snack.
Please be aware that at the top of the waterfall there is a sheer drop but you can head further back along the river to some rocks higher up and enjoy the views from there - we also love to have a splash and play in some of the mini waterfalls and pools at the top.

This is a short sharp walk uphill to the top of the waterfall. The path is a well maintained, easy underfoot slate or pebble footpath, but is mostly uphill. So smaller children may struggle.
AGE SUITABILITY: 4/5yrs +
Not pram friendly.
The path is mostly easy underfoot, however the path up to the waterfall runs alongside a sheer drop which made me a bit nervous with my 3 year old walking on her own.
