Castello Montebello, one of the three UNESCO-listed castles in Bellinzona, is a well-preserved gem of medieval architecture. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, this impressive fortress offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and a fascinating glimpse into Switzerland's history.
Originally built in the 13th century, the castle was expanded and fortified over time to protect Bellinzona, a key strategic point along Alpine trade routes. Today, it houses a museum showcasing archaeological finds, medieval artifacts, and insights into the castle’s history and significance.
Visiting Castello Montebello is a rewarding experience. You can explore its walls, towers, and courtyards, all while enjoying panoramic views of Bellinzona and the distant mountains. The castle grounds are well-maintained, making it a great spot for a leisurely walk or a picnic.
If you don't want to go inside the castle and are happy checking out the outside parts, it's free to visit. During the winter period, only the exterior and courtyards of the Montebello castle can be visited.
The castle is accessible by a scenic walking path from Bellinzona's city center or by car with nearby parking available. Admission includes access to the museum and the castle grounds. The site is family-friendly, with plenty of open space for children to explore.
Seraina’s Tip: Visit all three Bellinzona castles (Montebello, Castelgrande, and Sasso Corbaro) to get a full sense of the region’s rich history. At Montebello, take your time to walk along the outer walls for the best views of Bellinzona and the other castles. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the peaceful surroundings.
