The Bundeshaus in Bern, home to the Swiss Federal Assembly, is a stunning architectural landmark and a key symbol of Switzerland's political system. Perched above the River Aare, the building is as impressive inside as it is outside, with grand halls, intricate decorations, and a rich history.

The Parliament Building serves as the working seat of the Swiss government, where members of the National Council and Council of States meet. Visitors are welcome to explore this hub of Swiss democracy through guided tours and public sessions, making it a unique opportunity to learn about the country's political structure and its tradition of direct democracy.

You can also visit the Parliament Building:

  • Guided Tours: Free guided tours are available in multiple languages, offering insight into the building’s history, architecture, and political significance. Tours typically last about an hour and include visits to key areas like the National Council Hall and the domed hall. Advance registration is required, which can be done online or by contacting the visitor services.

  • Public Sessions: If Parliament is in session, visitors can watch debates and proceedings from the visitors’ gallery. No reservation is needed, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring an ID for security purposes.

  • Self-Guided Visits: Outside of tour times, the exterior of the Bundeshaus is worth exploring. The Bundesplatz in front of the building often hosts events, and the square’s water fountains are a highlight for visitors, especially in summer.

Seraina’s Tip: Each autumn in October and November, the Bundesplatz transforms into an open-air light and sound spectacle during the Rendez-vous am Bundesplatz. This captivating event projects stunning visuals and tells stories on the façade of the Bundeshaus, celebrating Swiss culture, history, and innovation. It’s free to attend and runs nightly for several weeks, attracting visitors from all over.
