The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) near Schaffhausen is Europe’s largest waterfall and one of Switzerland’s most popular natural attractions. With a width of 150 meters and a drop of 23 meters, the sheer power of the cascading water is both mesmerizing and humbling.

You can enjoy the falls from several viewpoints, most of which are completely free. The northern bank, accessible from the village of Neuhausen, offers great views, walking trails, and picnic spots—all at no cost. On this side, you can also stroll along the Rhine and find quieter areas to admire the scenery.

For a closer look, head to Schloss Laufen on the southern bank. Here, you’ll need to pay a small entry fee to access the castle, its panoramic glass elevator, and the viewing platforms that bring you right up to the falls. It’s worth it for the dramatic up-close experience of the roaring water.

If you’re looking for a peaceful way to enjoy the falls, take a walk along the well-maintained trails nearby, where you’ll find quieter spots to admire the scenery and take in the sound of rushing water.

Seraina’s Tip: After periods of heavy rainfall, the Rhine Falls are at their most spectacular, with even more water cascading down the cliffs. If you happen to visit after a rainy spell, you’re in for an extra treat. The same goes for spring when the snow in the mountains is melting and feeds the waterfall with an extra portion of water.
