Mount Pilatus, towering above Lucerne at 2,128 meters, is a legendary destination steeped in myths and surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery. Known as the "Dragon Mountain" due to tales of dragons that were once believed to inhabit its slopes, Pilatus offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, nature, and history.

Your journey to Pilatus begins with one of two iconic routes. From Alpnachstad, you can take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, which ascends at gradients of up to 48 percent, offering incredible views as it climbs through forests and pastures. Alternatively, from Kriens, a scenic gondola ride followed by an aerial cableway takes you to the summit. Both routes provide stunning perspectives of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks.

At the summit, you’ll find a range of activities and attractions. Panoramic viewing platforms offer 360-degree vistas of the Swiss Alps, Lake Lucerne, and even as far as the Black Forest on clear days. Several short trails lead to viewpoints and historic sites, including the Esel peak, the mountain's highest accessible point. If you're seeking a challenge, longer hiking routes connect Pilatus to nearby valleys and towns.

Seraina’s Tip: During summer, you have the option to do the Golden Round Trip, which combines a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, the cogwheel railway up to Pilatus, and a cable car descent to Kriens, followed by a short bus ride back to Lucerne. Alternatively, the Silver Round Trip offers a similar experience, replacing the boat ride with a scenic train journey.
