The Niederdörfli, often referred to simply as "Dörfli," is Zurich’s charming Old Town district on the eastern side of the Limmat River. With its narrow cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and vibrant atmosphere, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Switzerland’s largest city.

This historic quarter is a lively mix of history, culture, and modern life. As you wander through its winding alleys, you’ll find centuries-old architecture alongside trendy boutiques, cozy cafés, and inviting restaurants. The area is pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to take your time and soak in the atmosphere.

Some highlights of the Niederdörfli include Grossmünster, Zurich’s iconic Romanesque church, and the medieval houses along Niederdorfstrasse. This main thoroughfare is lined with shops during the day and transforms into a lively hub of nightlife with bars and clubs after sunset.

For a quieter experience, venture into the smaller alleys to discover hidden gems, such as quaint bookstores, art galleries, and unique artisan shops. If you’re interested in history, the neighborhood is rich with stories, from its medieval roots to its role as a hub of intellectual and cultural life.

Seraina’s Tip: Take your time strolling through the lesser-known side streets of the Niederdörfli to uncover charming corners and local treasures. For a great view of the area, head to the Lindenhof, a peaceful hilltop park overlooking the Old Town and the Limmat River.
