Known as the “Swiss Grand Canyon”, the Rheinschlucht (Rhine Gorge) is a spectacular natural wonder near Chur in the canton of Graubünden. Carved by the Rhine River over thousands of years, the gorge is a stunning landscape of towering limestone cliffs, rugged rock formations, and the winding turquoise waters of the Rhine.

The best way to experience the gorge is by taking a ride on the Rhaetian Railway or by hiking along the river. The train journey between Ilanz and Reichenau offers breathtaking views of the gorge, with windows framing its dramatic cliffs and lush surroundings.

If you prefer exploring on foot, several hiking trails wind through the area, including routes that lead to scenic viewpoints like the "Il Spir" platform near Flims. From here, you’ll have a panoramic view over the gorge and its meandering river.

One hike that I like to do is catching the train to Versam and walking along the Vorderrhein to Valdendas station, where you can get back on the train.

Seraina's Tip: If you'd like to go on a rafting tour through this stunning gorge, you can do so during the summer months. Kayaking is also possible.
