Riffelsee Lake in Zermatt, Switzerland is a tiny mountain lake known for its stunning reflections of the iconic Matterhorn peak. Located at 2,757 metres, Riffelsee is a popular spot for photographers and hikers. The best time to visit is early morning or late evening on a sunny day for the most picturesque views. In the right conditions with the calm water, the reflections of the Matterhorn are picture perfect.

🚞 How to get here?

Taking the train from Zermatt to Rotenboden is definitely the easiest route to take. So if you’re coming to see the reflections and to reach there as early as possible.. the train is the best way. With easy access from the Rotenboden train station, along the Gornergrat Railway, you can enjoy a leisurely 5min walk to the lake and then explore nearby hiking trails Look for the sign “ Riffelseeweg” it won’t be long after that you will see the lake.

🌼It is common to find alpine flowers at Riffelsee which make for the prettiest foreground for photos. Also look out for the popular Valais Blacknose sheep to roam around here too.

When to visit?

☀️Summer & early autumn is best. I recommend a sunny day when there are very few clouds.

🚞 Take a train to Gornergrat early in the morning and I recommend Riffelsee be your first stop. The first train is 7am and you can be at the lake by around 7.30am, this is one of the best times to be here in summer.

📸Morning has the best light for photography. The sun is right behind you and the colours of the sky are so beautiful and intense.

Autumn visit :

Keep in mind the sun rises later and days are shorter, I recommend visiting Gornergrat first and have Riffelsee be your second stop. By November there might be too much snow for the lake to be visible.

🥾2 of my favourite hikes in the area:

1: Gornergrat - Riffelsee : (2km downhill:40mins)

This is by far one of my favourite hikes in Zermatt. I love this spot as it’s one of the best photo locations to capture the Gornergrat Railway with the Matterhorn in the background.

2: Rotenboden-Riffelberg: (3km: 50mins)

This hike is stunning. You will often spot some sheep and marmots on this trail.

Enjoy! 🥰
