Spiez is a charming town situated on the southern shore of Lake Thun, approximately halfway between the towns of Thun and Interlaken. It is nestled between hills and vineyards on the shores of Lake Thun, boasting the stunning Spiez Castle and its picturesque castle garden. In my opinion it really is a hidden gem of Switzerland. With lots of hiking options it’s a great starting point for exploring the Bernese Oberland region.

🏰Spiez Castle:

This historic castle, dating back to the 12th century, is one of the main attractions in Spiez. The castle has been expanded and renovated over the centuries and now houses a museum that showcases medieval and Renaissance art, furniture, and artifacts. The castle grounds also feature a beautiful garden with views of the lake and mountains. You will love it!

⛵️Stroll along the Spiez Promenade:

I love taking a stroll along the Spiez Promenade. It’s got lovely cafes and restaurants to enjoy a bite with a view. 🧺 It’s also a great spot to pack a picnic and enjoy people- watching by the lake.

🍫Alpenrose Dorfplatz

Located in the heart of Spiez, Alpenrose Dorfplatz specialises in local delicacies and gourmet products. Here, you can purchase Swiss cheese, chocolates, wines, and other regional products. It’s an excellent place to discover the flavors of the Bernese Oberland.

🍰Bäckerei-Confiserie Michel

A local bakery that offers delicious Swiss pastries, cakes, and chocolates. It’s perfect for picking up a sweet treat or freshly baked bread. The shop also sells gift boxes of Swiss chocolates, ideal for souvenirs.

🧀Käseladen Spiez

A specialty cheese shop that offers a wide range of Swiss cheeses. You can sample classic Swiss favourites like Gruyère and Emmental to regional specialties. It’s a great stop for cheese lovers.

🍾Vinothek Spiez

This wine shop offers a selection of local wines, including those from the Spiez vineyards. The Vinothek provides wine tasting sessions, I’d recommend taking a tour and sampling the local favourites.

🍷Vineyards and Wine Tasting:

Spiez is known for its beautiful vineyards and wine production. You can tour the vineyards and enjoy wine tasting sessions, experiencing the unique flavours of Swiss wines, particularly the local Riesling-Silvaner and Pinot Noir.

⛪️ Church of Spiez (Schlosskirche):

Located adjacent to Spiez Castle, this Romanesque church is known for its historical significance and beautiful architecture.

⛰️Niesen Mountain

Known as the "Swiss Pyramid" due to its distinctive shape, Niesen Mountain is accessible by a funicular railway and offers spectacular views from its summit. It’s a spot worth checking out on your trip!

💦 Swimming at Spiez Lido

This is such a beautiful spot for a swim on the shores of Lake Thun. There is a large swimming pool, children’s pool, diving board, loungers and parasols. The water is heated too, which is lush!
