Tucked within the picturesque Appenzell Alps lies Seealpsee, a pristine lake that feels like something straight out of a fairytale. Accessible from the village of Wasserauen. With its crystal-clear waters, surrounding mountain peaks, and beautiful trails, Seealpsee is a dream to visit and remains one of my favourite travel memories.
š„¾Hiking options:
From Wasserauen, a well-marked trail leads you uphill toward the lake. There are two main hiking routes: a steep, direct path that takes about 45 minutes for experienced hikers, or a longer, winding route that allows more time to soak in the scenic views.
š¦Wasserauen to Seealpsee Trail (Direct route I took)
Distance: Approx 3 km (1.9 miles) each way
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour (one way)
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
This is the most direct and popular route to Seealpsee, beginning at the Wasserauen train station. Itās a steep, uphill hike with about 300 metres of elevation gain, mainly on paved paths, but with some uneven rocky sections. The trail is quite short, but the incline makes it moderately challenging. This route is ideal if you want a direct path to Seealpsee and are ready for a bit of a workout. Along the way, youāll pass through scenic meadows and local cows grazing, cowbells echoing through the valley really adds a quintessential Swiss touchš® After a steep ascent, the trail opens up to reveal beautiful Seealpsee.
š²Wasserauen to Seealpsee via Forest Trail (Longer- gradual route)
Distance: Approximately 4-5 km (around 3 miles) each way
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours (one way)
Difficulty: Moderate
For those looking for a more gradual ascent, this trail begins at Wasserauen but takes a longer, winding route through the forest, offering shade and beautiful forest views. The trail is less steep than the direct route, making it a bit easier, though it still has some incline. Itās perfect if want to take your time and enjoy a scenic hike to Seealpsee.
šThings to know:
1. Walking around the lake
A gentle trail circles the lake, making it easy to enjoy different perspectives and spots to take in the beauty. Each step along the shore offers a new angle, from the vibrant reflections of the forest to the deeper tones of the lake. The trail is flat and suitable for all ages, so you can take your time exploring.
2. Row Boating on the Lake (seasonal)
For a small fee, you can rent a rowboat and set out on the tranquil waters of Seealpsee. Rowing in Seealpsee is a special experience, providing a quiet escape and a 360-degree view of the landscape that surrounds you.
3. Picnicking with a View
I recommend bringing a picnic to Seealpsee. There are few better places to enjoy a picnic than by the lakeās edge. Local Swiss cheese, fresh bread, and apples make for a simple yet satisfying lunch with a view. Youāll find plenty of spots around the lake to relax, and soak in the tranquility.
āļø /š»Berggasthaus Seealpsee
A charming, rustic spot right along the lake's edge. Known for its cosy ambiance and stunning views of the lake and surrounding Alps, itās a popular stop to refuel after your hike. The restaurant embodies Swiss alpine charm, with wood-panelled interiors, traditional decor, and a large outdoor terrace offering unobstructed views of Seealpsee and the mountains.
āļøI recommend trying the rƶsti.
Open : seasonally, from around May - October, depending on weather and hiking conditions.
Berggasthaus Seealpsee also offers a basic overnight rooms for those who want to stay close to the lake and enjoy an early morning or evening hike.
Reservations: Given its popularity, especially in peak summer, making a reservation is a good idea to ensure a table, particularly if you plan to dine on the terrace.
If you have extra time:
Seealpsee to Ebenalp (Hiking Extension to Ebenalp and Ascher Restaurant)
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) from Seealpsee to Ebenalp
Duration: 2 to 3 hours from Seealpsee to Ebenalp
Difficulty: Challenging
From Seealpsee, you can continue up to Ebenalp, one of the highest points in the area. This trail is steeper and more challenging, with rocky and narrow sections. The reward, however, is spectacular: along this route, youāll pass the famous Ascher Cliff Restaurant, a mountain restaurant tucked into the rock face, and enjoy panoramic views of the Alpstein region. You can then take the cable car from Ebenalp back down for a gentler return journey.
šøSeealpsee throughout the year:
In spring, wildflowers bloom along the trails and the meadows turn a lush green. Summer is popular for hiking and boating, with clear days providing stunning views. By autumn, the surrounding forests are painted with warm hues of orange and gold, creating a perfect setting for nature photography. During winter, the lake and surrounding landscapes are often blanketed in snow, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy snowshoeing and winter hikes. Whatever the season , itās absolutely stunning!
