Castlewellan Forest Park is located in the town of Castlewellan in County Down, Northern Ireland. This enchanting park covers over 460 hectares, including a 40 hectare long lake.

You can view the large lake, explore the mesmerising Peace Maze made of 6000 yew trees and enjoy the 18th century National Arboretum of Northern Ireland with its incredible species of champion native and exotic trees. You will also find the majestic Castlewellan Castle built by the Annesley family in 1858 here. Interestingly the beautiful Castlewellan Castle has featured in several films including Woman in White (2018) and Mickeybo and Me (2004).

Castlewellan Forest has many trails suitable for all fitness levels. The top trails are:

Castlewellan Lake ( 2.4 mile trail) passes the former Ice House and lots of birdlife. Taking just over an hour to complete.

The Annesey Garden Walk (2.2mile trail) this extends out to Mitchell’s Lake in a loop. This is so beautiful to explore!

Bunkers Hill Walk and Play Trail is a great 1.2 mile trail perfect for families.

A little more about the peace maze. You have to find your way along 2+miles winding paths to the Peace Bell at the centre of the maze, and then find your way out again! It’s so fun for all the family! From experience it can take longer than you think, if you lose your sense of direction.

Animal Wood is a great play area for kids aged 4-11 and its right next to the Peace Maze. Follow the trail passing animal sculptures along the way.

🅿️ There is a charge for vehicle admission to Castlewellan Forest Park, it’s currently £5 for a car. Pedestrians are not charged for walking in the forest.

💚 As with any natural area please follow the principles of Leave No Trace, respecting the environment and wildlife.
