Silent Valley Mountain Park is an outdoor paradise if you want to explore Northern Ireland's natural beauty. Situated amid the beautiful Mourne Mountains, the reservoir provides much of the water for County Down. It’s around 50 miles south of Belfast and the closest town is Kilkeel.

The reservoir is surrounded by mountain peaks , woodlands and boasts spectacular views. The park offers seven walking trails and is home to the famous Mourne Wall which was built between 1904 and 1922. It took a mighty workforce of over 1,000 men to construct Silent Valley Reservoir. It was ideally placed to capture the water flowing from the Mourne Mountains, in an uninhabited, sparse region ringed by mountains. You can explore the rich wildlife, enjoy the peaceful lakes and pond. It’s one of my favourite spots to enjoy a picnic in Northern Ireland.

There is an onsite cafe and car parking available plus talks and tours if you would like to learn more about the area. With so much to do, visiting Silent Valley Mountain Park promises to be an unforgettable experience!

My 3 favourite walks here:

1. Silent Valley Ben Crom Dam Walk (10km)

This walk takes around 4 hours to complete.
Despite it being a longer walk ,it’s one of the easiest, with a tarmac , flat path. You will be rewarded with beautiful mountain and lakes views, with sheep roaming free on this trail. You will eventually reach the immense dam walls, the zig-zagging steps make the climb easier. From the top, the views are everything! What a place to soak in the natural scenery!

2. Heritage Trail (3km)
This trail only takes an hour, which includes historic landmarks linked with Silent Valley. This trail will take you past a he Watertown House, Mourne Hand, and memorial commemorating the nine men who lost their lives during the construction of the reservoir. Follow the yellow arrows, this trail has a slight elevation.

3. Silent Valley Trail (4km)

Follow the black arrows, this is more of a challenging trail. This looped route climbs the slopes surrounding the lake. You’ll arrive at the mighty Mourne Wall as you tackle this short but elevated trail! Along the way, you’ll pass through the abandoned village that was built for the construction workers.
