Rathlin Island is a small, stunning island located off the coast of Northern Ireland in County Antrim. Rathlin Island is just 6 miles from Ballycastle, but also just 15.5 miles from the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. To reach Rathlin Island you take the Rathlin Island ferry from Ballycastle Harbour! There are a few crossings every day, with a choice of the quicker pedestrian ferry or the alternative, vehicle ferry.
On the island you can expect to find spectacularly dramatic cliffs and views, incredible ancient artifacts, flourishing natural surroundings and a welcoming community with an interesting mix of cultures and languages. All of these come together to make Rathlin Island a truly unique experience!
Once home to Robert the Bruce, who gained his legendary inspiration from a spider he saw while visiting the island, this destination has both historical and natural significance. With its growing population of approximately 150 people and Northern Ireland's northernmost point, Rathlin Island is a unique experience where you can enjoy its wonderful scenery and many attractions.
Puffin Sanctuary
Rathlin Island is home to a diverse array of seabirds and wildlife. The puffins, typically call the island home between April and July. This is a great time to see these beautiful birds and also a visit to the seabird centre is a must.
🦭Seals also frequent the island. The harbour seal and the grey seal can be found in Rathlin’s sheltered bays and inlets. Mill Bay, Doon Bay, and Ushet Port are thr best spots to catch a glimpse of them. Please be sure to treat them with respect.
🚲One of my favourite things to do on Rathlin Island is to explore it by bike. You’ll find seasonal bike hire on the island, it’s worth booking in advance though to avoid disappointment.
☕️The Watershed Cafe is a great coffee spot! I also love their crepes and homemade cakes!
🥓 Hungry Seal food truck is a good spot for a cooked breakfast , lunch or dinner.
🍺McCuaig’s Bar is the only pub on the island. Great spot for entertainment.
💚 As with any natural area please follow the principles of Leave No Trace, respecting the environment and wildlife.
