The Slieve Donard hike is a popular trek to the summit of Slieve Donard, the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains and Northern Ireland. You access the trailhead for the Slieve Donard hike from the town of Newcastle.
Slieve Donard stands at 2,790 feet above sea level. The trail takes you through woodland, along the Glen River, and eventually ascends the mountain.
Route Options:
The Glen River Path is a popular route, following the Glen River through picturesque landscapes. This path is known for its scenic beauty and tranquility.
Another route involves following the Mourne Wall, which ascends the mountain ridge. The Mourne Wall provides a clear trail to the summit.
The distance and duration of the hike can vary depending on your chosen route and pace. The Glen River Path is approximately 5 miles round trip, while the Mourne Wall route covers a longer distance approx 7miles.
The terrain includes a mix of woodland paths, rocky trails, and open mountain slopes. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more rugged.
The summit of Slieve Donard offers panoramic views of the Mourne Mountains, the Irish Sea, and the surrounding landscape. On clear days, it's possible to see as far as the Isle of Man and the Scottish coast.
