Murlough Bay is in my opinion the most picturesque bay located on the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Due to its remote location, Murlough Bay is a lesser known stunning spot but a must-see on your Northern Ireland road trip!
Its thrilling natural beauty, captivated by the cliffs, bays, islands and serene atmosphere of the area makes it an unforgettable spot! Views of Rathlin Island, Mull of Kintyre, Islay, Jura and other Scottish islands can be seen across the sea, while historical lore adds to the ambiance. The green-covered hillside has exposed rocks of basalt overlaying sandstone and limestone. There are many long-forgotten lime kilns in the area too.
My favourite Murlough Bay trail:
There are many walks around Murlough Bay, but I’m going to share my favourite one. A shorter 4.4km hike , it starts at the car park on Murlough Road. Follow the narrow lane north towards Knockbrack Viewpoint, passing the former Glens of Antrim brewery. There’s a nice view point where the road does a hairpin bend before it heads southeast towards the coast, ending at another small car park. Continue along the top of the cliffs and keep a lookout for buzzards, falcons, etc they can often seen skimming the waves.
As you follow the lane down you’ll pass a concrete plinth marking the site of a cross on the pilgrims’ trail from the Old Church of Drumnakill. The trail descends quite steeply at the end onto Beach which is awe-inspiring. The return hike is the same way. Have Fun!
🎬 It was also a Game of Thrones filming location, the bay was used as a film location where Davos Seaworth was shipwrecked and later rescued following the Battle of Blackwater Bay.
The setting was also used as the fictional Slavers Bay on Essos. When Tyrion Lannister and Ser Jorah Mormont are taken prisoner as they walk towards Mereen and are spotted by a passing slave ship?
Top Travel Tip:
Fair Head is located northwest of Murlough Bay. I recommend a visit here too!
