Shakuson-ji Temple in Nagano is a must-visit for anyone who loves cliffside temples. As a fan of temples with dramatic landscapes, I had high expectations, and this place didn’t disappoint. The temple is perched on a cliff with breathtaking views stretching across the surrounding valleys, making it an incredible spot for both spiritual and scenic experiences.
Getting to Shakuson-ji is easy—the path is a short, manageable 10-minute walk, so it’s accessible for all fitness levels. The atmosphere feels peaceful and secluded, and with the temple seemingly hanging off the cliff, it offers an almost mystical vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere.
I recommend visiting in the early morning or just before sunset for the best light and fewer people. Shakuson-ji Temple is definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring Nagano and want a unique temple experience that combines natural beauty with Japan’s rich spiritual heritage.
