Hike
Hike
4-6h
This is one of my favorite winter hikes in Japan, largely because of the incredible view of the Yatsugatake mountain range from the summit. It’s a truly unique experience that’s hard to put into words—you have to see it for yourself to understand.
Trailhead: Tateshina Mountain Trailhead (Tateshina Tozanguchi)
The hike typically starts from the Tateshina Tozanguchi trailhead, which is accessible by car or bus. There are several routes up the mountain, but the shortest and most direct route starts from this point.
Hike Details:
Distance: Approx. 7 km (round trip)
Duration: 5 hours
The Route:
From the Trailhead
The hike begins with a gradual ascent through dense forest, offering cool, shaded paths. The first section is relatively easy, making it accessible for hikers with moderate experience.
Mid-Trail Ascent
As you continue, the trail becomes rockier and steeper, especially as you approach the summit. Here, you’ll encounter volcanic rock formations, and depending on the season, snow and ice patches may be present, particularly in the early spring or late autumn.
Summit of Mt. Tateshina
Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views, including the Yatsugatake range, Mt. Fuji on clear days, and even the Northern Alps. The summit is wide and flat, offering plenty of space to rest and enjoy the views.
Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:
By Car:
Drive to the Tateshina Tozanguchi trailhead, where there is parking available.
