Sakurajima erupts often so there are no trails to the summit. Instead, this is the highest point where you can view Sakurajima. The observatory also provides 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding bay.

There were bus access so you can get here by public transportation.

Access

By Ferry and Car/Taxi:

  1. From Kagoshima City: Take the Sakurajima Ferry from Kagoshima Port to Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. The ferry operates 24 hours and takes about 15 minutes.

  2. From Sakurajima Ferry Terminal: Drive or take a taxi to Yunohira Observation Deck, about a 20-minute journey uphill. Follow signs for Yunohira Observatory, which is the highest viewpoint on Sakurajima.

By Public Transport:

  • Sakurajima Island View Bus: From the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, take the Island View Bus, which runs a loop around the island with stops at major attractions, including Yunohira Observation Deck. The bus takes about 35 minutes from the terminal to the observation deck.

Travel Tips:

  • Best Time to Visit: Sunset offers stunning views of Kagoshima Bay and the city skyline.

  • Prepare for Volcanic Ash: Sakurajima is an active volcano, so light volcanic ash is common. Consider bringing a mask and hat, especially on windy days.

About:

Yunohira Observatory is the highest point on Mt. Sakurajima that's open to the public, offering a stunning view of the rough lava fields and occasional volcanic smoke plumes. Visitors can enjoy picturesque vistas of Kagoshima City and the serene waters of Kinko Bay. At night, the contrast between the dark silhouette of Mt. Sakurajima and the twinkling lights of the city creates a beautiful sight.
