Sightseeing
I visited Sarugajo Valley in July and August, and it was one of the best river adventures I’ve experienced. You can go exploring on your own or you can start at the Activity Center, where they offer watershoes, gear rentals, and even guided tours to help you explore the area. I joined a tour with two knowledgeable guides who led us upstream to some incredible spots. Along the route, we only saw a handful of other visitors, making this place feel like a true hidden gem. Autumn is also quite beautiful with the leaves changing color but the water may be a bit too cold to swim in.
About Sarugajo Valley
Known as the “Castle of the Monkeys,” Sarugajo Valley is a stunning nature park in Tarumizu City, Kagoshima. The valley is fed by a crystal-clear river flowing down from the Takakuma Mountains, creating ideal spots for swimming, surrounded by towering cliffs and lush greenery.
What to Expect
The river here is perfect for a refreshing swim, and adventure-seekers can enjoy cliff jumping from smaller ledges or swinging from ropes over the water—just like monkeys in their castle! Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in nature or an active day of exploration, Sarugajo Valley offers something for everyone.
